Is Peugeot 508 hybrid good? ›

Beyond the mechanicals, the 2022 Peugeot 508 plug-in hybrid has the same mix of equipment and trim levels as we have seen in previous models. And spoiler alert: it's quite nice. There's a nice interior with plenty of tech and nice touches, and the second row works well for loading up with kids and adults.

Officially, the 508 Hybrid is said to achieve between 166.2mpg and 235.4mpg.

Each 508 HYBRID and 508 SW HYBRID will be available with four driving modes: ZERO EMISSIONS: 100% electric drive for a maximum range of 33 miles* in the 508 HYBRID and 32 miles** in the 508 SW HYBRID.

Electric Handbrake Failure

Peugeot 308 and 508 models from around 2016 have reportedly experienced a flickering dashboard warning light for the handbrake, with the mechanism itself starting to fail. In cases where the problem is ignored, it can lead to the handbrake no longer restraining the car at all.

Hybrid cars are typically more fuel-efficient than their gas counterparts since they can switch between their gas and electric motors while being driven. That pretty much matches the petrol, which claims an 8.1-second 0-100 time and quotes a limited top speed of 250km/h. Replacement parts are widely available

Again, this point is closely tied to the previous one - part of the reason why Peugeot cars are cheap and easy to fix is because they're very common cars, and so it's generally easy for mechanics to find replacement parts.

Peugeot has done very well in recent years in surveys of reliability and ownership satisfaction, so it looks as if the 508 is a solid bet for reliability. Although the hybrid engines are fairly new designs, the 1.2 petrol and 1.5 diesel are long-serving engines, and shouldn't have any major gremlins left in them.

While you can expect about the same amount of maintenance and repairs as a regular engine, hybrid engines may cost more to maintain due to their advanced technology. This is just one of the many things to think about when deciding whether a hybrid vehicle is right for you.

Less Overall Maintenance: Similar to oil changes, you'll likely need less overall maintenance with a hybrid vehicle. With the internal combustion engine being used less, there are fewer moving parts that will be worn down.

Consumer Reports published annual reliability surveys for several years, which indicate hybrids are generally more reliable than their gas-only counterparts. But why? Hybrids were the most reliable among any vehicle types, with SUVs ranking third.

Higher mpg: Most hybrid SUVs get more than 35 mpg and most hybrid sedans get more than 45 mpg. That's about a 40 percent improvement over non-hybrids, on average. Easy to use: Unlike a pure electric vehicle, you don't have to plug in a hybrid.

Overall, hybrid cars can make great choices for long distance road trips thanks to their fuel economy and emissions benefits; however there are still some tradeoffs that should be considered before making this decision such as engine size and additional repair costs if something were to go wrong while on the road.

Your hybrid battery will likely last between 10 and 15 years

Most hybrid batteries last 10 – 15 years. Mileage seems to be unimportant. We've replaced batteries on 12 year old hybrids with only 45K miles, and seen good original batteries on hybrids with 300K+ on the clock.

For most people driving the average amount of 10,000 miles per year, the original hybrid battery will last long enough to get through a decade of ownership. As many people begin to look for a new vehicle around the 10-year mark, this should be enough.

Is plug-in hybrid good for long distance? ›

If you are planning on driving your regular hybrid car a long distance, you should expect to run on electricity for the first 50 miles and then on petrol for another 300 miles or so. When fully-charged, the battery of a plug-in hybrid can last about 300 miles (though some Tesla models champion 350!).

A plug-in hybrid may be able to get a little charge through regenerative braking. But since a plug-in car has a larger battery that it relies on more, it needs to be connected to an external power source to fully recharge. Full hybrids can recharge their electric batteries through regenerative braking.

Minimize the batteries at 100% state of charge

Keeping the state of battery charge, from 0 percent to 100 percent , also improves the performance of the battery life of your vehicle. Even though a full charge will give you the maximum operating time, it is never a good idea for the overall lifespan of your battery.

Don't sit in neutral gear in start/stop traffic – electricity will not be generated and the hybrid battery will discharge power. Accelerate gently and stick to the speed limit to get the most out of your electric drive mode. Use cruise control to maintain a steady speed and reduce running costs.

The first generation design was available in electrified form too, but that was a self-charging set-up mated to a diesel engine. This time round, a 180hp 1.6-litre turbo petrol powerplant combined with an 8-speed auto gearbox is mated to a 110hp electric motor on the front axle powered by a 11.8kWh lithium-ion battery.

Peugeot 508 RXH emissions come out at 107g/km. This is largely down to its fuel-efficient engine, start/stop technology and, of course, the ZEV electric mode. Select this mode and you can run on pure electric for up to 2.5 miles and up to speeds of 40mph.

Ease of use

So even if you don't have off-street parking or charging points at work, they're still a viable option. While not as efficient as plug-in models on paper, if used primarily around town and at lower speeds, these regular hybrids can be impressively efficient.

Plug-in hybrids

On average, the battery of a plug-in hybrid can last for about 300 miles when fully charged. However, some high-end models like Teslas can cover up to 350 miles without charge!

However, it's important to note that as self-charging hybrids have a much smaller battery compared to plug-ins, meaning that they can run on electric-only mode at just low speeds and have a very limited range (typically just 1 – 2 miles).

A medium-duty diesel engine found in class 4, 5 and 6 trucks has a lower life expectancy of 450,000 to 700,000 miles. However, when driven smoothly, it can last a very long time.
