It has taken many years, but finally premium economy is offered by the majority of long haul international airlines.
We have been following premium economy since it was first introduced. You can read many of our previous articles on this website. Have a look at the related articles at the bottom of this one for more on the history of premium economy, and the reasons there are so many different varieties.
We have also reviewed many of these seats – head to the Tried and Tested section of the website.
Here is our round-up of the options, updated, so you can decide which is best for you. We will keep updating this, and also include more aircraft types where the seating differs significantly between aircraft types.
AIR CANADA
Premium economy passengers are fast-tracked through the airport and given a hot towel and welcome soft drink, followed by wine, beer, spirits and “premium” hot meals served on china with proper cutlery and glassware. As with most airlines here, you can check in two cases (23 kg each).
The IFE screen is 28 cm/ 11 inches (B787-8 and 26.4 cm/ 10.4 inches (B777-300); there’s a USB port for charging, in-seat power at every seat, adjustable headrest, a comfortable pillow and blanket, as well as a CleanCare+ kit, containing a mask, hand sanitizer, and antiseptic wipes, in addition to an amenity kit when flying internationally.
All premium economy seats have a comfortable 96.5 cm (38 in) seat pitch with ample room to stretch out. On the B787-8, there are three rows in a 2-3-2 layout (economy is 3-3-3).

Is World Traveller plus better than premium economy? ›Flying World Traveller Plus is an exciting upgrade. The seats on our premium economy flights are wider, with greater recline, lumbar support, a head and foot rest, plus extra leg room to stretch out.
Is it worth it to pay for premium economy? ›Premium economy's big selling point is more space. The seats are an inch or two wider on average than the typical coach seat, and the rows are farther apart, offering several more inches of legroom. Most premium economy seats recline, and many have footrests. How much space you actually get depends on the airline.
Do you get better food in premium economy? ›But premium economy, if done well, offers more than just a few extra inches of leg room. Think of the ideal premium economy as a kind of “business class lite” option, with better meals, fancier cocktails, roomier seats, and upgraded amenities such as dedicated check-in and access to more storage space.

They also include checked baggage, dedicated cabins, in-flight entertainment, better food than Economy, and dedicated flight attendants in each cabin. However, in Business Class you'll get even more legroom than in Premium Economy. Even better gourmet meals and finer wines.

Even though you won't be reclining in a flat bed in any premium-economy cabin, a combination of larger seat dimensions, wider armrests, adjustable leg rests and extra features, like upgraded bedding and noise-canceling headphones, almost guarantee you'll feel more rested upon arrival.
Is it worth upgrading to World Traveller plus? ›Also, there are few opportunities to upgrade within World Traveller – apart from the exit rows. If you have a long flight or an overnight flight I think the upgrade cost is absolutely worth it.
Do you get lounge access with premium economy? ›The meals are the same, though business class passengers are offered beverages before takeoff. Business class passengers have lounge access, which priority economy passengers do not.
How much more should I pay for premium economy? ›Premium economy fares are significantly more expensive than economy fares (often two to three times the cost). However, don't expect an experience two to three times better. You'll need to fly business or first class for a truly premium experience.
What is United Airlines premium economy like? ›United Premium PlusSM offers you extra space, added comfort and more ways to enjoy your trip on select flights. Your seats are closer to the front of the plane, giving you more legroom, elbow room and room to recline. Each seat has its own power outlet and USB charger.
How much will Emirates premium economy cost? ›How much does it cost to upgrade to premium economy on Emirates? If you booked the economy ticket, you can upgrade it to premium economy which cost you around $400.
How can I make premium economy more comfortable? ›- Pick the right airline. ...
- Choose your aircraft wisely. ...
- Select an emergency exit row. ...

- Consider upgrading to an extra legroom seat.
The separate premium economy cabin is also set within the first rows of the aircraft with a dedicated lavatory and reserved overhead bin compartment for carry-on luggage.
What do you get extra in premium economy? ›
Typically, premium economy will provide about 5-7 extra inches of legroom, plus 1-2 extra inches of seat width and 2-3 extra inches of recline. On a 12+ hour flight, every inch counts, and you're likely to have more room than you would on a short regional flight.
What is the number 1 best airline? ›1 airline of 2022: Qatar Airways. Qatar Airways ranked at the top of Skytrax's list. The carrier's chief executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, stated in a press release that Qatar Airways' goal when it was created in 1993 was always to be named the best airline.
What is the most luxurious airline in the US? ›Winner: Delta
Each airline offers chef-curated food and luxurious bedding on board, as well as premium spirits. Both United and American Airlines offer pajamas on select international flights, while Delta doesn't. When it comes to customer service, however, Delta is a clear winner.
Business class seats start filling up from front to back, so your best chances of scoring an empty seat next to you are to sit in the back of the cabin (this is of course a moot point on US airlines, where there's no such thing as an empty premium seat)
Can you sit in an empty business class seat? ›So, yes, the flight attendants know which seats in business (or first) class are supposed to be empty, and if someone is found in one, they'll be asked to move... (and if you're on a US-based carrier, it might be a little stronger than just a request!)
